An insistent knocking pulls my consciousness from the peace granted to me by sleep. Why won’t it just stop? I roll over and bury myself in the soft downy duvet, hiding under the pillow.

“Not feeling like a morning person today, hmm?”

“Go away.” The words clap through my head like thunder, as the events from the previous day begin to trickle in.

“Never.” He chuckles and pulls the covers off me. Cool air freezes me on contact. “If you’re cold, I’ve got the perfect way to warm you up.” Tepid hands slick up my legs, followed by open-mouthed kisses. Instead of warmth spreading under my skin, my blood turns to ice in my veins and I kick out, striking him square in the jaw so hard he’s knocked off the bed.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” I scream as I claw the sheets back in place to cover myself up, trying to calm my heart before it beats out of my chest.

“I… I just wanted to say a last goodbye. To leave with my face still damp from your juices and your taste on my tongue. A small but perfect memento of our time together.”

“What the fuck is wrong with you?” I might whisper my words, but they’re cold and unforgiving. “In what world do you think it’s okay to touch me?”

“I don’t know when I’ll see you again or if I’ll even get you at the hunt.” The strained look in his eyes tells me his words aren’t coming out right. His Adam’s apple bobs violently in his throat. But, seriously, who is this man at my feet?

“What the hell? Have I woken up in an alternate universe? Who even are you?” I shake my head as he tries to come closer. Tears as glacial as the arctic cascade down my burning cheeks, and shame wars with despair inside me. “Don’t think for a moment I will open my legs for you today, after that… that thing.” I wave frantically again, because verbalising my disgust just isn’t enough. “I might be a whore but it’s certainly not by my choosing, and you jus—“

“Don’t you dare finish that sentence, young lady. I have never—will never—treat you like a whore.”

“You just fucking did!“ I scream at him. “You just did,” I echo the words on silent lips, but he hears them as his shoulders drop and he hunches inwards on himself, trying to appear smaller and less threatening. However, it’s too late for that. The damage is done.

If he’d have struck me with lightning, it would have hurt less than the lashing those words struck on our souls. “I never expected you to be worse than your brother, but I guess the joke’s on me, because even all your pretty lies can’t hide the monster you really are.”

“Butterfly, it’s not like that. I didn’t mean to. I just… I don’t know how I’m going to walk out of here today and leave you behind.”

“So much for wanting to help me and get me away from here.
